“Ribosome lamp” is a small felt toy with added USB driven microcontroller and individual addressable RGB LED strips. It represents in form and function the ribosome, the production center for proteins in our cells. The USB cord and the long LED strip represents an RNA molecule under translation going through the ribosome, while the smaller LED strip at the top represents the amino acid chain produced. A small button at the top is used to input a specific RNA sequence, and each triplet will be translated to the corresponding amino acid, based on the Universal Genetic Code. The color schemes for the RNA and AA sequence are derived from the ones used most in bioinformatics software (ClustalW). The Ribosome lamp is an awesome addition to the night stand of the aspiring scientist.
